Some people may avoid traveling in Laos or other SEA countries during the rainy season because of the "inconvenience" of rain, but it's rain that fills the rice paddies and like with weaving, I am amazed at the skill and hard work it takes to grow rice. In a future post I'll talk about Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers: The Story of Success, where he features a chapter on "Rice Paddies and Math Tests" where he talks about how rice farmers have always had to work harder than almost any other kind of farmer and how that might account for Asian students doing so well at math and not shying away from schoolwork. Thought provoking!

But as a photographer I get goosebumps traveling in the rainy season, seeing the artistry behind the hard work of planting rice, and above are three photos from our trip in June taken in Huaphan Province.
